每个连接到互联网的设备我们都需要给它分配一个独立的、不会重复的数字编号，这个编号就是我们所说的IP地址。一个IP地址是由4个数字，中间以.来分隔构成，例如：127.0.0.1。

这些IP地址通常会被首先分配给互联网服务提供商（例如TM-STREAMYX, YES, P1 WIMAX），IP地址通常可以被用来标志电脑接入互联网的地理位置。

因为IP地址直接使用会比较晦涩难记，所以就出现主机名，一个IP地址可以被对应到一个主机名，这样用户就很容易记忆了。 一个主机名可以被查询出对应的IP地址是什么，反过来也是如此。 互联网服务提供商们曾经为每一个用户分配一个静态的IP地址，但是随着互联网用户的逐渐增多，而静态IP总量又有限制，所以现在很多服务商开始为用户分配一个动态的IP地址。这样就可以减小对IP地址总量的需求。但是这也限制了用户使用静态IP地址来建立一个网站的能力。除直接使用静态IP之外，在互联网上也可以用一个IP来对应多个网站主机名，这些主机也被叫做虚拟主机。
